Wednesday Forum: Civil War Eve
We've arrived at the day before the Civil War, the biggest game of the modern OSU football era.
Here's the place for you to discuss what's on your mind before the big game. What gives you confidence that the Beavers will win? What worries you? I know these are questions we've been trying to answer all week-- but there's still room for discussion.
We hope to have the results of a Q+A exchange between ourselves and Addicted to Quack up later in the day, so stay tuned for that.

To get us started...
There’s been a lot of talk today about the spread opening with Oregon favored by ten points. I’m not much into gambling or making predictions and the like… but I think that Oregon State covers—and this game is decided by less than ten points. Now, lots can happen and things could go either way… but I see this game being decided by a late-game touchdown drive or a last second field goal… something just tells me it’s going to be close.

I had the opportunity, but I'm not this year
Decided to stay home and watch it on TV. Went to Autzen in ‘07… it was a great experience, but it’s hostile, and just, well… not very pleasant. And we won that game. Plus, I am obligated to take care of my blog responsibilities during the game, as there will likely be an influx of people looking to talk about the game.
Plus, it’s mom’s birthday, so going to Autzen and making a day of it probably wouldn’t have been the best idea.

I think that's a wise decision
especially after what happened at BSU. You never know what those *uck running backs might do after the game………….

I'm in awe.
I love this blog. It is very comforting for me. I have to admit I have a problem with going and reading the comments about the Civil War on O Live and ESPN. It is quite humorous to see all the duck fans’ posts. The amount of nonsense and unbridled ignorance that is found in these posts has me thinking of how great it would be to see them choke on their words. I’m frightened for Beaver Nation at Autzen if we do win. There could be some very upset, unstable, and unintelligent people running around

Just stick with the Beaver fans
And you’ll be alright. And yeah, this blog’s great.

This is true of any fanbase. I’m hoping that security will be beefed up a bit for the game and from all indications I’ve received from the UO Athletic Department, it looks like it will be

Supposedly this is a big deal for Bellotti for this game. There was some piece about it all in the R-G I think, and how after some of the stuff that happened at the Purdue game MB got a bit more focused on creating a safer environment while still keeping that loud UO edge, and he’s especially concerned about this week’s game. Will be interesting…but totally agree about happens in any fanbase, I mean look at some the issues last year in Corvallis.
All in all here’s to a great game with a great bunch of State of Oregon fans, and oh yes a Beavers victory to round it all off nicely.

With all this build up
If we win the Civil War the Rose Bowl is going to seem like a let down game.
Ha-Ha, just kidding. But it kinda feels that way, doesn’t it?

I'm worried about 2 things
1. Our secondary’s ability to defend against the big play.
- Obviously Masoli is a great runner, but I think for the most part we’re going to contain him. He’s going to be scrambling around behind the line of scrimmage, forcing our D to cover guys down field for longer than 3-4 seconds. Can we do it? I think so.
2. Scoring TDs instead of field goals
- When we get inside the 30, we NEED to score TDs, not settle for 3’s. To get this done, Riley might have to go for it on a couple 4th downs. Hopefully he surprises me.
If we can do both then I think we have a very good chance of winning. OSU 38 UO 35.

What gives me confidence
Is that the Duck defense can’t stop all of our weapons on offense. Canfield, Jacquizz, James, Halahuni, and Damola. It’s going to be virtually impossible to stop those five guys.
Something else that gives me confidence that hasn’t been talked about much this week is the revenge factor. No one on this team has forgotten what happened last year. The blowout, the 695 yards of offense, not going to the Rose Bowl, losing at Reser. Hate is a very strong motivator to college kids. They not only hate the team they’re playing against, but they hate the way that team beat them last year.
What worries me are the obvious things. Playing at Autzen, stopping Masoli and James, stuff like that. But I guarentee that Banker has a plan to stop the Duck offense after last year’s debacle.
Whatever happens tommorrow, it is going to be one Hell of a Football game. I say to just enjoy the three hours of some of the best Football you are going to see all year. Enjoy the exposure on ESPN, enjoy the great Football being played, enjoy Erin Andrews, enjoy the passion of the fans, and enjoy the excitement of the Rose Bowl and the Civil War all wrapped up into one. Enjoy it all, because who knows how long it’s going to be until this happens again.

The hate/revenge factor
I agree to a point, but you also have to consider that this can also lead to undisciplined play, which to the beat the dead horse topic of the week is going to be very important for the defensive side of things.
My hope is that the team comes focused and overall feeling at ease (as in confident they can win) first and then channels last year into an extra bit of motivation that really puts the stamp on a strong win. So we are probably saying the same thing in the end.

You're right
But I think Riley has done a good job in the past of keeping the undisciplined play to a minimum in Civil War games. Hopefully there won’t be any Keaton Kistrick late hits negating Interceptions tommorrow.

Agreed
Could be just me, but for Riley (& his coaching staff) I think we have all wondered can he really get this team that next step, and with how he has been slowly building to this point it has been a bit of a mystery. So now you have the BIG game (Pac-10 championship), against the rival who is a damn good team, with a ton of emotional baggage left over from last year, and on the road in a hostile environment to add on.
My guess is he is loving every moment this opportunity is giving him and ready to show off what this program is even with his “aw shucks” Mr. Nice Guy surface demeanor.
I think there might be other opportunities coming in the future, but at the same time there might not be many more with how the Pac goes you know. (Cliché alert) Now is the time. I think Miller in his blog has labeled (I can’t quite remember if it was him or not) OSU as an elite Pac-10 team. I disagree though, they are “almost” an elite team and can become one tomorrow or stay an “almost” for another season and leave us in that consistent Riley fog of mystery.
Going to be interesting that is for sure.

IMO this is such a perfect scenario for a RIley-coached team. Almost all these variables favor OSU and Riley.

I'm in there with you rvm
Last year the talk of the season for the Beav’s (and rightly so) was knocking off then #1 SC. The CW and the chance to go to the RB snuck up on them after the emotional high wore off. They stood at the brink of going to the Grand-Daddy of bowls. The Beav’s slipped and fell. I don’t think they were hungry enough to beat the ducks by seasons end after the close game at UA. Now the Beav’s know what that bitter pill tastes like and will fight as hard as they have to to win this game. Coach Banker took it personal and will have these guys ready.

It seems to me that this game is absolutely monstrous for OSU
moreso than it is for Oregon.
U of O always seems to have that national recognition, whether it be the Gameday appearances in Eugene, the “glitzy” uniforms, Phil Knight, etc. and it shows with the recruits that become interested in them.
This game is OSU’s chance to sort of steal that spotlight away from U of O and earn a ton of national recognition, going into the Rose Bowl and into next year. This is like the program’s chance to go from “the nation’s best kept secret” (thanks Herbstreit) to being a team out on the national scene.
