Game 5 Recap - Oregon State 64, George Washington 57

The Beavers closed up the month of November with a 64-57 win against the George Washignton Colonials. The Beavers had a great first twenty minutes, jumping out for a 34-24 lead at Halftime. The game was played in front of the Obama family in Washington DC, in front of 2,400 people at the Charles E. Smith Center.

Seth Tarver lead the Beavers with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

Josh Tarver had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Calvin Haynes had 8 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, and 1 block.

Oregon State got up 14-0 before GW even know what had hit them. The Beavers got up by as many 16 points during the first half, but George Washington went on a 6-0 run to end the first twenty minutes. The half was a 360 degree turn around since their last game, in which they trailed Sacramento State 44-22 at Halftime.

Star-divide

The Beavers relied heavily on their veterans throughout the game, with Josh Tarver playing 38 minutes along with his brother Seth seeing 32 minutes of action.

For the Colonials, Tony Taylor lead the way minutes-wise, with 28. Lasan Kromah lead George Washington with 15 points, followed by Damian Hollis with 13. The Colonials came into this game with a record of 4-0 after defeating UNC-Wilmington, Boston U, UMBC, and Princeton.

Freshman Joe Burton recorded 6 points, along with 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block. The other two Freshman, Jared Cunningham and Angus Brandt, recorded two points each.

The other two freshman, Rhys Murphy and Roberto Nelson, are out because of an injury and an NCAA Clearinghouse issue.

George Washington outscored the Beavers in the Points off Turnovers category, 29-17. The Colonials also outscored the Beavers in the 2nd Chance Points category, 17-4.

The win came after the team visited President Obama in the White House on Friday.

The 2nd Half went back and forth for a while, with both teams missing easy shots and turning the ball over. The Beavers finally took a 15 point lead with 4:50 left in the game, but just win it seemed that the Beavers would pull away, the Colonials came back. After taking an 11 point lead with 55 seconds left, GW went on a 9-0 run to cut the Beaver lead to two with 35 seconds to go. But Oregon State would hit 5 out of their last 6 free throws to ice the victory.

With the win, the Beavers improved to 2-3 on the season. The game also broke a two game losing streak for the Beavers over the course of 19 days.

As far as the crowd goes, the Colonial Army was loud at times, but the Beavers did a great job of taking them out of the game early. It was also the first game of the season for Beaver Play by Play announcer, Mike Parker.

Next up for the Beavers is their game in the Pac-10/Big 12 Hardwood Series against Colorado, Friday at 8:00 PM in Corvallis, Oregon.

You're right

But this was a HUGE win for the program. A win on the road in a hostile environment, against a pretty good team, can do wonders for a team’s confidence.

Roeland

I have been unable to watch any games. What is happening with Roeland? He is not scoring many points.

Just not getting much playing time

We knew that somebody’s minutes were going to suffer because of our new depth this year, I guess it just happened to be Roeland.

Turnovers

The turnovers have to stop or it’s going to be a long season. Cut the turnovers in half and they beat GW by 15-20 pts and are never challenged.

True

But turnovers are a part of Basketball. We do need to cut down on them, but we still won by seven points. I’ll take that any day when we are playing a pretty good team on the road.
