Johnny Hekker Semi-Finalist For Guy Award

Oregon St.'s sophomore punter Johnny Hekker has been announced as one of 10 semi-finalists for the 2009 Ray Guy Award, given annually to the nation's top punter, by the Augusta Sports Council.

Hekker, from Bothell, Wash., was originally a walkon the the Beavers in the 2008 season, and earned both the starting job and a scholarship. He was named the 2008 Sun Bowl Special Teams MVP after booting 10 punts for an average of 45 yards in blustery conditions in El Paso.

This season, Hekker is averaging 42.7 yards per punt, with 15 punts downed inside the 20 yard line. Hekker has also had five touchbacks, and nine kicks for over 50 yards.

Hekker is joined on the semifinalist list by Drew Butler of Georgia, Peter Caldwell of Utah State, Desi Cullen of Connecticut, Ryan Donahue of Iowa, Chas Henry of Florida, Jeff Locke of UCLA, Rob Long of Syracuse, Zoltan Mesko of Michigan and Matt Reagan of Memphis.
