Exhibition Game 1 Preview + Thread: Southern Oregon
OSU vs. Southern Oregon - 2 p.m. - Gill Coliseum - FREE Video on OSUBeavers.com
It's a basketball game! A real... live... basketball game! After a turnaround season last year in which the Beavers won the College Basketball Invitational, Craig Robinson has his sights set higher as he embarks on the 2009-2010 season.
The Beavers have been picked to finish fifth in the Pac-10 media poll, and have aspirations of qualifying for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1990.
The Beavers return four starters and nine letter-winners from last year's team. Add in Craig Robinson's first full recruiting class, which ranks in the Top 25 nationally, and the Beavers have a fair chance to do so.
"We're looking forward to getting started," head coach Craig Robinson said. "The exhibition games give us the chance to try out a lot of new pieces. I know the players are excited to start the season. It's going to be a great opportunity to see where we are at after the first few weeks of practice."
Southern Oregon, a NAIA member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference, finished last season with a record of 9-21 as the Raiders are led by Humphrey Jackson, who averaged 8.5 points and handed out 119 assists last year.
Southern Oregon opened its season on Friday with a 90-85 victory over Indiana-East. Ryan Staker led four Raider players in double figures with 13 points as Drew Herrera and Justonn Smith each had 12 points in the win.
The game is being streamed live on OSUBeavers.com... make sure you take advantage of that if you have the time.

can't wait!
Oh, and the GameTracker is actually kind-of fun (funny?), like the POV shot of the free throws and how they have the ball bounce around on the rim to tease you if it goes in or not on the shots!
Video still sucks though.

How have the freshmen played?
I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
Cunningham and Brandt have got some good minutes
Cunningham is 0-5 from the field though and Brandt seems solid going 2-3 from the field and 1-2 from three-points.

Angus Brandt is an absolute beast.
He’s got a nice, fluid shot. Joe Burton is playing some good defense, but that’s about it. And Cunningham has nice hair.
Hi, my name is Connor. Except over on ATQ where I am known as, "JConnor."
Cunningham also has some hops. I've heard from friends at Dixon that he is a beast in the air
Should give us some nice swagger we have lacked in basketball in a LONG time

Doesn't seem like any problem with this one
Makes me wonder though on an exhibition game like this and how much does it really give the coaches something to look at to work on things with the players? I assume as much if not a bit more than a scrimmage but still seems a bit hard to pick things out when it is so lop-sided and I’m sure the intensity is winding down a bit for the Beavs about now.
I’m sure Coach Robinson will find lots to work on though, he comes across as that type you know!
-RVM
I think these games are more about technical things that stat lines. Making sure guys are in the right spots on offense and defense, taking care of the ball, etc

$12 a ticket for the 500 people there? lol

Yep, but just seems like there is that lack of focus that could happen with the whole should treat it like a game but it isn’t really. But does get the game feel going enough though I’m sure it is a good thing. Also good to get the young guys out there and playing someone different in front of a crowd.
Just made me wonder about it all though.

I think the lack of focus is kind of expected
I’m sorry, it’s just hard to get up for a game against Southern Oregon in front of 500 people.
Now as a fan though, I love it. Just gives me something to do for two hours on a Sunday afternoon.

He will
Wasn’t he like our most glorified recruit?

This last year?
He was rated highest, but I think a lot of people were excited about Cunningham, who was also a 4* player. Nelson was ranked in the 50s, Cunningham in the 70s I think?

Because its quite upsetting

Yep, that 200+ million arena for a team not expected to finish in the top half
Oh, football, still some games left, we’ll see how it all sorts out won’t we. Clean up some stuff and keep Canfield playing like he has been lately and the Beavs should be able to give them a run in the CW, but just my opinion.

Yeah, I mean, I am keeping the faith. But they dismantled USC last night and we have to be honest with ourselves.. Unless we figured out a way to slow down the Spread Offense, we are in big trouble. That offense is clicking

I guarentee
That Banker will have our defense ready for that game. We are not going to let them do what they did last year against us.
Hi, my name is Connor. Except over on ATQ where I am known as, "JConnor."
I hope so. They look scary good right now
The best offense in the country and they finally learned how to play defense. Holding SC to 20 points, 3 in the 2nd half (they are a notorious 2nd half team) was incredible

Keeping me here are we?!!!
Oh, pretty much agree, but at the same time UO has a tough coming in schedule, and as we learned last year every game now is just that much more amplified for them coming in. Stanford and Arizona on the road makes it still a ways to go. I think they can win out and go BCS this year but at the same time don’t count out some of their opponents coming up (even ASU could be interesting, though that could be ugly too for the Sun Devils).
I will be very disappointed, and surprised, if the Beavs don’t give them a game this year if we are healthy, even if they are playing like they are now. I’m with Connor on this one, just have this feeling, in no way is it a guarantee we win feeling, but a better feeling this year, and yes I didn’t like how it stacked up last year at all but feel okay this year so far, but we’ll see still lots of football to be played by both teams.
Oh, I do think Texas might have something to say about best offense in the country.

I agree that a healthy team presents a challenge for them
And yes, they don’t exactly have an easy schedule coming up. But still, racking up 600 yards of offense is impressive in its own right. To do it against USC is something completely different.

I agree
And not to take anything against them, but remember the week before we had almost 500 yards against them at their place.
So what I’m saying is we have the potential too.

You make good points. And maybe if it wasn’t our rival I’d be looking at things differently. But they are on a roll right now, and it’s going to take an absolute perfect game on both sides of the ball from any team to beat them

Oh, and I’m with you, the UO fans around me are just going to be smug-city this next week, and that UCLA for us got too sloppy for my sensibilities but more to go before we get there, let’s just wait and see.

phew!
Anyway, really need to go now.
Make no mistake that UO win was HUGE and could well be the greatest win of the program’s history and if not the greatest very much one of the biggest.
But I think our OSU program has some stuff to prove also and we can’t just throw in the towel on the CW just yet, and personally I won’t be completely happy with an Emerald or Sun bowl this year, but just my opinion and feelings.

The way I'm looking at it
We beat Cal and USC at home last year, and now they have this year. Also, let’s not forget what happened in 2007 when they were ranked number one in the nation. So they shouldn’t get all that excited.
I will admit that they are playing very good football right now, but let’s see what happens after the Stanford and Arizona games.
Also, forget the damn Rose Bowl, how sweet would it be to knock them out of the National Championship.
Hi, my name is Connor. Except over on ATQ where I am known as, "JConnor."
Most likely Rose Bowl
I just think too many teams to jump past to get to the NC, even if they win out, and see my comments above in agreement with your middle statement there.

If Florida or Alabama loses a game
And then one of them loses again in the SEC Championship, I think that knocks them both out. It will be close, but I think the Ducks could get in.
Hi, my name is Connor. Except over on ATQ where I am known as, "JConnor."
You could be right
I don’t know, to be honest haven’t followed everything as close this year.
But was thinking they would have to jump/equal Florida, Alabama, Texas, LSU, Iowa and then you have some interesting wild cards in TCU, Cincy, and especially Boise State.
Still a long ways to go for all the teams though!
I would be very impressed if UO can win out though, and will own up to my being impressed if it happens, let’s just put it that way.
