Beaver Gameday Open Thread: UCLA

OSU vs. UCLA, 1pm, Reser Stadium (TV on FSN, delayed at 3:30)

Oregon State is looking to bounce back from a hard-fought loss against USC with a home win against Rick Neuheisel's UCLA Bruins-- a team that's currently sitting at 0-4 in Pac-10 play.

Despite the fact that the Bruins are seemingly falling apart in the middle of this 2009 campaign, Neuheisell still maintains hope that his team will somehow turn around their season and qualify for a bowl game-- but they'll have to win four of their final five games to do so. The Bruins haven't tasted a victory since mid-September.

The strength of this UCLA team is their defense, with NFL-bound DT Brian Kelly leading the charge. UCLA's other stud defensive tackle, Jerzy Siewierski, recently went down with a foot injury. The Bruins are 8th in the conference in stopping the run, but second at stopping the pass.

The Bruin offense has been sub-par to date, as they rank 9th in nearly every offensive category, generally leading only Washington State. UCLA is only averaging 187 yards in the air and 109 on the ground, per game. Like almost every team who struggles on offense, the Bruins are having issues finding a starting quarterback Rumor has it that both redshirt freshman Kevin Prince and true freshman Richard Brehaut will split time in today's game.

Game-time is set for 1p.m. in Corvallis. The game will be tape delayed on FSN starting at 3:30.

So I wonder

why the slow start for the Beav’s today. You’d think that after last week they would be fired up and ready to rip UCLA apart.

by RayBeavFan on Oct 31, 2009 1:22 PM PDT reply actions

That's a good question...

OSU has been playing well early in games so far this year… I like the way the defense is playing, but not sure where the offense is. We again should have gotten 7 on that opening drive, but settled for 3

I think the coaching staff

may be scripting the first series to look at the defensive adjustments

Offense being off doesn't surprise me too much

They really put it out there last game, and a bit of a slow start makes sense. I think they will now after this TD settle in.

I’m very happy about the D, get a couple of those fumbles and the score would be very different I think, they are doing the job.

Defense seems to the one

Who is about to break this game open, sounds like they are just off fractions for some big TOs.

Yeah,

someone is going break it soon. It sounds like Banker and Langsdorf are opening up the playbook.

Sweet!

offense clicking now

20-0 at half would be awesome, defense clicking, second half could be solid

Half

Not bad, not awesome, should’ve been more, defense seems to have things going well so I’m feeling okay so far.

Maybe the Beav's should

get up an hour earlier on gameday…. that way they’ll be awake for the first quarter!

The Beav's have

too many penalties in the last two weeks

by RayBeavFan on Oct 31, 2009 3:01 PM PDT reply actions

Beav's having trouble

putting these away. I really don’t like the pervent defense!

Dammit

I can’t beleive that the beav’s let themback in it!!!!!

by RayBeavFan on Oct 31, 2009 3:46 PM PDT reply actions

Way too close, but a W nevertheless

Penalties, those almost lost it for us. Never should kept them in it like that, controlled the game except for what was it like 5 to maybe 10 minutes for UCLA?

Nice that the D won it in many ways though, but need to put in a full offensive/defensive game next week.

This team seems to have a knack for making things tougher than it should be

They really need to cut the silly penalties out. 12 men on the field on a punt?

by tingeyga on Oct 31, 2009 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

no kidding

I understand it is a conference game and they don’t come easy, but yes like they said on the radio that penalty was the same as a turn over, the only one of the game by both teams wasn’t it? Almost cost the game, but it’s over (unless your watching the delay broadcast!) and time to move on again.

Both Rodgers over 200 total yards each,

With Quizz over 100 rushing, and James over 100 receiving, and it still takes a last minute touchdown!

As Quizz said, “We have to do something about this field goal business.”

Not that there was a problem with Justin Kahut, who, fortunately, gave the Beavers the points they needed.

Full report on homecoming festivities and football coming tomorrow, and thoughts on the biggest win in the history of the U of O too, after I let it all sink in a little.

The inability to make good plays on first down in the red zone is again leading to field goals when touchdowns are needed.

Credit the Bruin receivers, but there is a problem with the Beaver safeties, and both their drop depth, as well as their pursuit angles.

Fortunately, the Wild Flying Beaver made it’s appearance, and Sean Canfield knows who the Beavers’ bread, butter, and also their jam, meat, and potatoes is.

And the Beavers finally got some sacks.

But we will all wake up from dream visions of Bruin DB Alterra Verner, who would have run all the way to Philomath had he not dropped that ball that should have been for the go ahead touchdown. Verner, by the way, is going to wake up a few times with that same image.

Penalties

I went to the game today. Quizz is correct about needing the score TDs rather than FGs.

Also, penalties kill the Beavers. The illegal participation penalty was a new one on me. With better control of penalties, this game would not have been very close.

How many penalties were called on the Beavers? I lost count.

Yeah

It seems like weŕe the only team in the world that does not get any calls at home.

No kidding

the last couple of games have been a little hard to watch. And now we’re going to suffer the inflated heads of the green and yellow fans. I’d sure like to see better consistency of play from the Beav’s as a whole.

A win is a win is a win

Man, what a game. ItÅ› funny, I do not remember a game when my heart was beating that fast. Once again, the Beavers have trouble with that killer instinct in order to put teams away.

The Fake Field Goal was awesome, even though the play-clock ran out before we could snap it. I definitely think we should use that again this season.

The WildBeaver works wonders again. I say we keep running it until a team can stop it.

The Beavers played a good game. It was definitely a fluke that the Bruins tied the game back up. I mean, an Illegal Participation penalty, then a 50 yard bomb, then converting on 4th and 7, and then getting the 2 point conversion was just crazy.

The Beavers are a good team, we jsut need to put the opponent away!

Did you go to the ASU game last year? I went to that one and that one had a wild finish too, but yes that end of the UCLA game, yikes almighty. Glad we won on a TD, adds a bit more authority to it, but damn.

The Beavers are a good team, we jsut need to put the opponent away!

Couldn’t agree with you more here. We have maybe two games where we can get away with the lack of TDs in the redzone and penalties but we also have two games where we absolutely cannot do this. And I would prefer a strong building on every game going into the very tough and what could be a very important CW game. The team has shown some awesome play at times (Stanford 1st half, USC second half), but yes indeed need to put away, and in the case of SC take down, teams when they have the chances.

But you know I don’t remember Riley teams ever doing this, it is almost like the flip-side of the way his teams play that we have to put up with the lack of running away with games in order to have at the same time the teams play tough and keep coming at teams like they do. I take your statement though and take it farther, and I would say that for this season it is what is keeping the Beavers at being only a “good” team and not a great team, and I think really think they are better than these game scores reflect, but take that as you will I’m an OSU fan and a bit bias!

Yeah

I did go to that one. It was different though. Against ASU the Sun Devils were in it the whole game. Against the Bruins, even though we were only up 16, it felt like there was no possible way in Hell that they would get two touchdowns and two, two point conversions.

That’s why you have to have the killer instinct though. I think we should of gone for it on the 4th and 1 instead of kicking the Field Goal. If we convert it, the game is positively over then.

Agree with you on all the points.

Yes, I was very surprised about that 4th down call, I don’t know just seemed like the right time to do it there. I’m not the coach though and I guess if they stop us and that takes 3 off the board then maybe that means UCLA wins, don’t know, I felt pretty good about going for it personally.

It soes take three off the board

But I think we get it. It was only like a half a yard anyways. Sean with the QB sneak, Jacquizz or McCants up the gut. Or even the Wildcat! (That would of caught them off guard.)

Very tough choice, I’m glad I didn’t have to make it.

yep

I totally agree with you, was just trying to think about the flip side and I guess it did pay off kind-of. But I just felt like sneak it up and no timeout, and yes game would have been over with a TD there.

Which is all funny to me, in a way, because Riley and Co. had that great reverse call to score the winning TD and didn’t play for the FG there!
