Rhys Murphy Out About A Month
Rhys Murphy, the freshman Coach Craig Robinson envisions as the Beavers' back up point guard behind Seth Tarver in the Oregon St. 1-3-1 zone defense, will be out at least four weeks after breaking a bone in his foot in Friday night's practice.
The 6'7, 200 pound Aussie fractured a bone in his right foot according to sports information assistant Michael Collins.
The setback in Murphys' training will put increased pressure on S. Tarver, as the preseason games will be vital to the overall record, which needs to be a good as possible if the Beavers are to reach their goal of an NCAA berth, or even an NIT invite. And with the late start he will have when he returns, there will be barely more than a month at most before Pac-10 action starts, by which time a backup for Seth will have to have emerged.

Did I read that correctly?
6’7" POINT guard?
Defensively, the point on the 1-3-1 can force the ball
to one side or the other, and into another speed person.
Coach Robinson has indicated that Rhys’ length and reach can be a mismatch for the size player typically running into it from the other side.
Much like using a point post on offense, Robinson looks to create mismatches at times, rather than match-ups.

Go Beavs!
Was Murphy really slated to back-up at PG?! I thought he was projected at SF/SG? With his athleticism it seems like he’d be a better fit there.
I know we’re into strange positions and position assignments (point-center?) but is he really being looked at as our PG or just a “point” position on D?
Like Andy said above, it's a DEFENSIVE point guard
He, just like S Tarver, would not be carrying the ball down the court. But when we get set in our 1-3-1 defense, Tarver and Murphy would be set at the top of the key, defending the opposing team’s PG. That is why the length of these guys is so important.
It still appears that J Tarver and Cunningham are going to be offensive PGs

yeah it's not a true "point", it's just Robinson's terminology
I was talking to Deane, of all people, the other day, and he said that the players/coaches consider Schaaftenar to be a Guard in Robinson’s system, but he really plays the Center position in regular basketball speak.

Well
This hurts. Sounds like he’ll miss the first four games but should be back for the George Washington trip.
