WildBeaver Formation Works Wonders as Beavers Down Trees

Danny Langsdorf brought the Oregon State rendition of the trendy Wildcat formation out of the lab Saturday afternoon.

On it's debut play, it produced sophomore tailback Jacquizz Rodgers' longest rush of his OSU career-- a 61-yard scamper that set the Beavers up for their second touchdown of the game. Jacquizz would score four touchdowns on the afternoon and account for 271 yards of total offense-- almost certainly his best game since the Beavers downed USC last season.

Oregon State moves to 4-2 overall with the win and 2-1 in Pac-10 play, as they dealt the Cardinal their first conference loss of the year. The Beaver defense held the highly touted Toby Gerhart to 96 yards on 20 carries. While it was still a decent statistical game for Gerhart, and while he still broke off some decent-length runs, Oregon State did a great job of containing him and preventing Stanford from taking over the game on the ground.

All your post-game thoughts here. We now have two weeks to prepare for USC.

Great win for the Beavs

I loved the Wildcat formation. This was definitely our most balanced game of the year as far as through the air and on the ground. The Rodgers brothers had great games, along with the entire defense.

The crowd was awesome too. I thought the noise level was great, especially on third downs.

Overall, a great win for the Beavers. Is it just me, or do the Beavers have a legitimate shot at knocking off USC?

we got a shot for sure

Riley already has USC’s number plus we got a bye week to prepare for them. Doesn’t Riley have like a superb record on games after a bye?

Riley is undefeated when having a bye week to prepare

It’s something like 10-0 (includes bowl games)

I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

I'll agree with you

If the Beavs play like they did tonight, it looks like a legit shot.

the Wildcat works perfectly for Oregon State

because they already have the perfect guy (James) to run in motion and either receive the handoff or fake it…

Just back

Fun game! I thought the score actually didn’t end up reflecting how well the Beavs controlled that game. Quizz was just in a zone today, incredible game.

The team keeps improving and very much looks to be tapping into their potential.

Just got home 1/2 hour ago

What a great game! Stanford was never really in it. We were right behind Luck and Gerhart’s bench. It looked like the beavs had Gerhart pretty banged up. He was moving a bit gingerly whenever he came off the field. I think the bye week will help the Beavs, giving them some needed extra time to sharpen up before the USC game.

Yeah

Great win, but I was kind of disappointed by the defense in the second half. I know the game was pretty much already over, but the D shouldn’t let up that much.

always something to work on, but still I thought it was a solid showing

And if it is any consolation one thing to consider is that Stanford was taken out of their normal offensive scheme by being down 31 – 7 at half so then OSU’s defense was playing an offense they probably didn’t practice and plan for in that second half. So yes they probably got a little lazy at times, but I really think a lot more of it was because Stanford’s plays took the Beavs by surprise and it was hard to adjust, the Beavs at times just looked totally out of positioin and people were WIDE open. It was almost like this weird the Beavs got the Cardinal out of their game and that ended up getting the Beavs out of their game.

But I see it as another thing to approve upon and the defense looked very very good in the first half. I mean I don’t think Stanford had a 100 yards for either rushing and passing until a bit into the third, it was like 3 to 1 in total yards in that first half. And to keep Gerhart under a 100 was pretty well done, that guy can fall forward and seem to still gain 4 to 5 yards!

And how about

James and Jacquizz both in the backfield, I loved that.

and both catching the ball

I know some people have been a little down on getting Quizz out of the backfield to throw to, especially after what happened at Arizona last year, but damn that saved us at times, and Quizz has some excellent hands as a receiver and get that dude out in the open field—holy moly. He is just a solid all around player (okay much more than just “solid”).

Man, that was a fun game to be at.

Unfortunately, unless something comes up this was my last game for the season. The UCLA game should be a fun one too, Halloween, crazy fun, sigh…

Exactly.

But in all honesty, those aren’t the numbers I’m worried about. Completely secondary.

Yep

TW’s point about specifically the world ranking deal, and I agree with both of you. It comes down to the Ws and Ls numbers.

by rvm on Oct 12, 2009 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

W/L's definitely most important.

The other numbers usually just explain why it’s a W or an L or are results of the W to L ratio. How scientific of me. And all this before noon. Jeez.

On the subject of numbers, I haven’t minded Quizz not breaking 100 yds. in the past few weeks. His carries are trimmed back a little bit but his role as a receiving option has been a really exciting wrinkle in the offensive game plan this year. I like seeing him get the ball in space, though I’d like to see it more than just on draw plays.

I guess my most favoritest number would be all purpose yards, which happens to be the Rodgers Brothers’ specialty. Lucky for us.

by ArbyOSU on Oct 12, 2009 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

This might just be the "Ticket"

against USC! Remember last season Quizz beat them between the Tackles mostly, then bounced out of the zone to the outside. Now he’s catching balls out of the backfield too, and with the “Wild Beaver” SC will have their hands full with Quizz let alone the rest of the offensive weapons.

by RayBeavFan on Oct 12, 2009 8:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

Totally.

I don’t even like talking about that. It’s like talking about a no-hitter in the seventh. I just don’t want to jinx them.

I will say that I’m pretty impressed by that stat. Here’s to keeping up the good work.

James Dockery

Is it just me or is Dockery turning into a pretty good cornerback?

It looked to me like he was playing with more confidence.

Also, Quizz can catch the ball. In terms of yards receiving, he was our leading receiver yesterday. Quizz was just plain awesome against Stanford. No wonder he was national player of the week.

by leon0112 on Oct 11, 2009 9:58 PM PDT reply actions

He's coming along but still has a long ways to go.

I’m glad he plays so fast and physical but he’s had so many instances where he has gotten to the ball early, grab a jersey, etc. He’s looking better though.

I gotta say that Cameron Collins and Jordan Poyer are two that excite me on D. I think that those two could end up being very good playing behind that D.

by ArbyOSU on Oct 12, 2009 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

He's pretty good

But he needs to turn around at some point instead of watching the reciever the whole way. He’ll also get called for PI a lot easier if he does that.
