BEAVERS WIN THE 330TH CIVIL WAR!!

Despite missing a lot of free throws down the stretch, the Beavers survived Tajuan Porter and Oregon down the stretch and went on to beat the Ducks 57-54 in front of a great crowd at Gill Colisuem.

With 2:02 left, Roeland Schaftenaar, Pac-10 Player of the Week, delivered the dagger with a 25-foot three-point bank-shot. He only had nine points on the game as he dealt with some foul trouble early in the game, but Roeland delivered the big shot when it mattered.

Here's the place for all your post-game comments. If you attended the game today, I'm especially interested in your comments... if you could, send me an e-mail (my address is below) so we can converse.

Once again, final score: Oregon State 57, Oregon 54.

GO BEAVERS!!

Looking at Play by Play at ESPN

TP attempted only 5 shots on 2nd half, 4 of which 3 pointers. But only managed to hit one 3 pt-er
In fact that was his only made shot for the 2nd half/

Nice adjustment on defense for the 2nd half

Great game, fun atmosphere

I’m disappointed in the Beaver Dam. They got really quiet for long stretches, and they are the ones needing to fire the rest of the crowd/team up. I kept looking at Terrence Boyd to see if he was enjoying himself. He kept looking at his phone the whole game and was texting. But who knows what that even means.

Anyways, nice to gut out another win. 4 in a row. Looking forward to getting the Arizona schools after they had a tough weekend with the Washington schools.

Oh yeah, Roberto Nelson was in attendance

As was AC Green. It was cool seeing Green high fiving the students before the game, and trying to get them fired up during it. David Lucas was there as usual

Yeah he was sitting behind the basket on the Oregon State side. Sitting next to Roberto Nelson the whole game

Hopefully Nelson was talking up the school, telling him what kind of impact they could make together

I'll be there thursday!

I hope it’s a great atmosphere. Everybody that’s going be LOUD! I think we can beat UA and ASU but we’re going to have to play like we did at the Bay Area.

I see us losing to Arizona but beating Arizona State

I don’t know why. It’s just a hunch

That's funny

I had very similar thoughts and didn’t know why either for it seems so opposite of what should happen.

Anyway, I thought it was pretty neat tonight (FTs = work = hell yes), not the “best” played games but the atmosphere at Gill was great overall so I wouldn’t be too hard on the Dam. Sure it was maybe quiet at times but when it needed to it it all got loud and when has that last happened like that at Gill? As with the team getting Beaver Nation back on board won’t happen overnight and its slowly coming around. If that game happened last year we would have been on the other side of the score and there have been a lot less people in attendance. I enjoyed myself.

True, I need to not jump on people too soon

I was really just hoping for a Terrence Boyd chant from the Dam. Nobody had even heard of him. The Beaver Dam people need to do their homework just a little bit more…

But it was a great atmosphere. I just posted a quote from Coach Robinson. God I hope he stays

Agree

but the Pac-10 is weird right now. I think on any day anybody can beat anybody. Both should be good games though. I think we’re at the point where we can play with anybody.

FTs

Needs to work on getting better on FTs. Especially on crunch time
only made 1 of the last 7 FT attempts.

That was another 6 points there.

someone posted this at the pure-orange.net forum. I think it is a good analysis

Theme of the Game: We Have Met The Eneny and It Is Us

Outrebounded. Outhustled at times. Out of control at other times. Compounding all that was the abysmal FT shooting at the end that gave the Ducks their end of game miracle shot opportunity.

Folks, we have met the enemy and it is us. Rebounding can be dealt with by proper positioning. Hustle is a matter of who wants it more and a good a$$ chewing is in order on any player who gets outhustled. The worst outcome we should get is a tied up ball or a foul, all other things being equal. Maintaining the poise all 40 minutes is key as we aren’t going to do a Loyola-Marymount on anyone and simply blow-n-roll. Studs capable of playing at the Pac-10 level have ZERO excuses for missing end of game FT’s as those players (hopefully) came from winning programs that knew what it took to put an opponent away instead of choking at the end.

Now let’s look at what Oregon brought to the party. The little guy from Motor City hoisting treys. That’s it. He did his number in the 1st half. Our D adjusted it’s defense of him and that left him high and dry for trying uncontested 3’s. That was their only O-threat. With 3/4 of the 2nd half gone, Oregon had only scored 9 points. Unlike the Elite Eight teams Oregon has had, this one does not have the multiple outside shooting threats to truly spread out a D. That’s why they are now 0-9 in Pac-10 play.

Nice Win for the Beavers

This was a nice win for the Beavers. Roo was in foul trouble and they couldn’t rebound to save their lives and yet they still won. Good victory.

So here is the question. Is there any way the Beavers could end up the conference season with a .500 record? They will need five victories in the final half of the season.

@Oregon, Stanford, @WSU, Arizona, Cal?

It's possible

This weekend’s games against the Arizona schools are going to be crucial. Arizona State is reeling right now (anybody know why??) and Arizona just isn’t being Arizona.

Both schools killed us earlier in the year, but as we have seen, our learning curve has been exponentially large this year. Losing to Howard by 2 to start the season, then beating them by 36 a month later… That is where our team is now

They adjust, we adjust

that is what is great with the coaching and this team.

That is why most of our Pac-10 wins are come from behind.

Arizonas would still be hard. But I still rooting for the wins

The adjustments were KEY

It was a sure sign that Craig has this team headed in the right direction, and what a damn good coach he actually is

Fantastic win!

Gill was definitely rockin’ tonight. Although I would’ve liked to have made more FT’s during crunch time, it was still nice to see our defense step it up. WE NEED TO MAKE OUR FREE THROWS.

GO BEAVS!

That's how we lost the WSU game

We’d be looking at 5-4 right now had we hit clutch free throws. They can make or break a game/season

What's going to be really interesting is to see how these guys deal with being thrust into super-stardom almost overnight

It’s a valid point, so hear me out. On campus, everyone knows who the football players are. They are just big guys, wearing “OSU Football” gear everywhere. But more often then not, you know the guy plays football, but you don’t know who he is. These guys, like Haynes, Johnson, Shaftenaar, they are going to be noticed around campus. This place has been hungry for a good basketball team for a while now. We’ve got a few wins, and it’s been great. It’s cool having basketball mean something again, but there is so much more to do before I would consider us a “good” basketball team.

It’s like being away from meat for 20 years. And all you want is a nice, big, 20 oz NY steak and mashed potatoes. What you get, however, is a Big Mac and a large fry. Delicious? Yes. But there is better out there.

A dumb analogy, maybe, but my point is that I would consider this season so far to be a Big Mac and fries. Pretty soon, I want that f*cking steak. I hope the team does too and doesn’t let a few Pac10 wins go to their head.

I do suppose the Big Mac and fries is better than the

Filet O’ Fish that UO is getting this year :-)

I’ll stop…

Yeah

I want to see how these guys are going to be affected by the ‘fame.’ Calvin Hampton barely plays and is already getting noticed in one of my classes. Hopefully they don’t become complacent because (just like you said) they definitely have a ways to go to becoming a good team.

We’ll see how this all plays out.

4 game winning streak

does not make the players super-stars. Let’s hope Coach Robinson helps the kids keep this in perspective.

None of them are going to play basketball in the NBA. This nice run has brought them to .500. Their RPI still over 100.

It is a huge improvement, but they had a long way to go.

by leon0112 on Feb 1, 2009 4:02 AM PST reply actions

You're right, technically.

But for a school that’s been itching to get a winner, a 4 game winning streak does make superstars. Yes they may not be “super stars” outside of Corvallis, but remember, in a tight knit city like Corvallis, they are going to be. It’s just the way it is

This is very true, I agree

You just needed to see some of the players interacting with the crowd and the Dam at the end of the game to see this. And I would add that yes perspective can be a good thing but so can “superstar” confidence. This confidence has helped them win, will continue to help in any future wins, and will create an atmosphere that brings in more fans and will help in recruiting. I do have a feeling Robinson won’t let them get full of themselves though and I think that is the dangerous thing.

I will add

That what these players have done in many ways make them more “superstars” than those who will be winning Pac-10 championships and going on to the NBA.

If (I’m personally thinking "when") this team goes on to bigger things and brings in the NBA superstar type of player these group of players will have even more to be proud about. If this all happens they will have been instrumental to putting OSU basketball back on the map. Sure the coaching is HUGE in this all, but we can’t underestimate the way these players have come out and played to take a team that couldn’t win anything to one that is playing like this. No one had expectations for this team, they could have rolled over a few times already this season. They can bring this with them with whatever they do after school.
