Beavers Wrestle to Victory in Last Civil War

When the last Wrestling Civil War took place on December 7th, Ducks and Beavers knew they only had a limited amount of time to wrestle.

That Civil War was the last one that will be staged at Mac Court. The final hurah for Gill Coliseum's Civil War came on Sunday.

The Oregon athletic department announced in July that it plans to discontinue the wrestling program at the end of the season. The school reinstated baseball, which was dropped in 1981, and added women's cheer. However, the wrestling program isn't going down without a fight. Head over to www.saveoregonwrestling.com to see what they're doing.

With the Beavers only leading by three points heading into the final matchup at 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Chris Platt pinned Oregon's Ron Lee at 1:44 of the second period to seal a 22-13 victory.

"It was a great finish," Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky said. "It could have gone any way. Emotions play a big part in a meet like this."

The Civil War matchup with Oregon was Oregon State's final meet of the season before they head to Eugene the first week of March for the Pac-10 Championships. Before the meet, Oregon State honored it's five seniors: Neal Beaudry (Newberg, Ore.), Louie Camarillo (Salem, Ore.), Andy Hall (Hermiston, Ore.), Travis Gardner (Portland, Ore.) and Kyle Larson (Hermiston, Ore.).

After the 133 pound match, a special intermission took place honoring the third longest rivalry in NCAA Division I wrestling history, recognizing former Oregon and Oregon State alumni and other individuals who had an impact on both programs.

"These meets are fun to be in on both sides," coach Jim Zalesky said. "I guess I don't want to see that end."

The final results:

Oregon State 22, Oregon 16
