We're Gonna Miss You, Sammie

Well, it's official: The University of Pittsburgh will be the last college team that Sammie Stroughter gets to make his mark and impression on. Not since Sabby P have we had a Senior leader who showed so much class and resilience in his career that it's actually sadder to see "Sammie Stroughter, the person" graduate rather then the "SS, the player." From his freshman year to this year, he has epitomized everything that a student-athlete should be. He is humble, hard-working, and gracious. Anybody who has had the chance to meet this amazing human being knows just what a great person he truly is. I honestly believe that his leadership will be missed ten times more than anything he brought to the football field, and that's saying quite a bit.

Here's some of Sammie Stroughter's stats:

  • 74 catches for 1293 yards and 5 TDs in his Junior season
  • That same year, he returned 3 punts for TDs, including the photo above against USC
  • This year, he has caught 64 passes for 952 yards and 7 TDs
  • While he didn't return any punts to the house this year, he has had many electrifying punt returns that have put us in excellent field position

We all know Sammie had some personal issues last off-season, but he showed a ton of heart in coming back for his final year and leading this team to yet again another great season. For those who don't know what happened to Sammie, go ahead and read this. Sammie was and will always be one of my favorite all-time Oregon State Beavers. The man from Sacramento is going to go on and do great things.

One of my favorite all-time highlights/calls from Mike Parker involved SS

I'm gonna miss the "SAMMIE! SAMMIE! SAMMIE!" chant on every punt

He really was one of the greatest

I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

Amen to that!

I hope we get to see him in the NFL in the years to come…

My favorite memory of Sammie...

USC game this year. Sammie had already gotten banged up earlier in the game. Jacquizz hurt his ankle on the last TD run. Sammie was the guy helping Jacquizz off the field. I’ve watched the replay of that game 4 or 5 times, and I get chills seeing that every time. So yeah, Sammie wins at life.

My favorite...

Sammie, thumping his chest as he sprinted in for six against USC in 2006.

I’ll miss him on the field and wish him the best on and off it in the future.

I agree.

Sammie has reached Simonton status in my book. A great guy, a great player and a college graduate. Can you ask for more from a student-athlete?

After his personal issues last year and everything that he went through, it was so gratifying to see him reach top form again this year – he rates as one of my all time top Beavs too…plus can you imagine the influence he’s had on the Rodger’s brothers? What a leader and role model for the younger players.

I really feel for and relate to him on a lot of levels and that’s why, with the great routes, catches, blocks and returns, I can really appreciate him. It’s a shame we don’t get to know all college athletes this well (and probably a good thing that we DON’T in many cases—not everyone is a Sammie).

Swagger

Sammie has got such a swagger to him, it’s awesome. Even though I haven’t met him he sounds like a great person off the field, and on the field he is such a beast. Has anyone noticed all the jawing he does after he makes catch? I think #19 deserves to be retired.

That's an interesting thought

I don’t know what the rules are for retiring #’s, but #19 definitely needs to be considered. Everything he has done for OSU in sports and academics is incredible. He is a STUD in every sense of the word

It can. I’m thinking that the pop culture sense of swagger—denoting confidence, ability and the “it” factor not so many possess nowadays—is what is meant here. Sammie’s the kind of player that can smile or pound his chest and he basically does it for the entire team. Hell, you can be watching on TV and still get up for a Sammie play.

Yes

But Sammie does it in a fun loving way.

Sammie @ Arizona this year

I have never been so fired up on those to final drives, and I was watching it on TV. Had those plays come from a different player, I don’t think it would’ve had the same effect. (I found myself jumping up and down and losing my voice because of it, haha) You can tell he loves his team and the game. That’s why it’s easy to like him.

He was definitely a game-changer.

Sammie will definitely be missed.

Yep, and what made this come across to me more than anything was the Cal game and how he was challenging the Rodger brothers to one up him on the plays. They just were feeding off each other all game. It was awesome to see.
