Excited about Beaver Nation
I just got done reading Bobby D's six-part series on the future plans of Oregon State athletics on osubeavers.com. And wow, am I excited. Reading all of that and realizing where the program was 10 years ago and thinking about where the program might be 10 years from now really gets your blood flowing (and takes a little sting away from that loss to Oregon). I really believe that this program is headed in the right direction not only in football but in basketball, baseball, wrestling, volleyball and every other sport. Bobby D really has some great ideas of what to do and I can't wait to see them come to fruition. It is just a matter of time before the Beavs are consistently competing for Pac-10 and national championships year in-year out in every sport!!
GO BEAVS!!!

A good read.
Yeah, you guys should be proud of DeCarolis. He really is putting you on the map.
Just one thing… it may be just me, but I find it rather ironic to see a line like,
Beavs are consistently competing for Pac-10 and national championships year in-year out
That is, with all grief Beaver fans give Duck fans for allegedly being cocky just by aiming high. Just my $.02.

He said it's a matter of time before....
Oregon fans say it now. Gosh, butthol, acting like a true media asshole. Just taking what you want and making it sound how you like! :)

I'm confident we'll be back in a couple of years
The funny thing about basketball is it really is unpredictable. One or two talented players can make all the difference (see: Michael Beasley, Bill Walker @KState)

Coach Robinson is already making strides in recruiting, nabbing a 4 star recruit in Roberto Nelson. I have no doubt on what VD is selling here.

And another 3-star
Plus they have another 4-star who has “Oregon State in the lead” and a 5-star somewhat interested… If anyone cares I’ll look for the names but yeah, exciting stuff
Plus we beat Fresno State, HEYYY ahaha

My 2 cents
For the moment I know this side stepping your initial argument, but one thing I would like to point out is that OSU has already competed for (and won) national and Pac-10 championships. Baseball is the obvious example, but also technically football this year was competing for the Pac-10 championship, Wrestling in 06-07 won the Pac-10 championship and competed well in the Nationals (if I’m not mistaken). Gymnastics last year is another example. I’m sure I left out other examples from the last five years.
So, I guess my point is that it is not ironic for an AD to make this type of statement about his programs with the trends that have been happening the last few years. And yes he did state it along the lines of what VD corrected you on, but I actually think he could have said what you implied as currently competing and still have been correct when looking at all the athletic programs.
Just as personally I would not find it ironic if the UO AD made similar claims with the recent success of cross country and volleyball, or even the present/previous success of football.
So backing up I can see your point that both sets of fans (and I’m partial to this next bit) and especially OSU fans can be a bit cocky about their athletic programs. And yes to finally come back to your main point it is a bit strange when one set of fans gets down on the others about this confidence. But finding irony can cut both ways for I do find some UO fans do the exact same thing to OSU fans when it comes to “aiming high.”

Of course not
That’s what AD’s do. That’s how they make their money, firing up their programs.
Maybe it was stupid of me to point out, but all I was saying was that the line I quoted may be a little kettle-meet-black. That’s all.
Kicker.

I think you have a case about some of the fans, but it such a different thing when you have an AD talking about everything together (as you noted). And I think that OSU has a pretty good case right now to make such claims about all the programs, but maybe I’m being too cocky :)

Cocky
I don’t think you are being too cocky at all. I also don’t think that Duck fans should all be labeled as “elitist” because we want the football team to contend for the PAC 10 title.

Yep, that’s the Catch-22 of it all isn’t it. As a fan you want your team to compete at the highest level and if you don’t have these expectations you become a “fair weather fan” or too much a pessimist “naysayer”/“wet blanket.” But when you talk about expecting to be at that high level (and I’m not considering here talking smack/trash to your opponents) you are labeled as “elitist,” “cocky,” “unrealistic,” and so on and so on.

expectations vs appreciation
I’m one of those who is prone to think we’re better than our record or poll status, thus will make posts about Rose Bowl or NC worthiness from time to time. I also remember when Oregon football was soundly mediocre. I never want to become the typical Rubber, Bammer etc., fan who EXPECTS his team to reach the highest rung every year and if they don’t puts up one of those idiotic www.fireyourcoach.com websites. Yeah we’re good. Yeah we can beat anyone when the stars are properly aligned but all I expect is a winning season and a bowl, so I’m happy…
I’d still like to whack BSU’s #21 with a 2×4, however…

duk fans, and expectations....
- BDC has never ragged on duk fans for claiming their “elite” football status. So pumping up his own fan base isn’t hypocritical
- Competing for Pac-10 or Natl. Champ. is much different than claiming your “elite” status. As an example, Notre Dame is part of the football elite, W Va isn’t……… even though over the last 5 years the win/loss is heavily in W Va’s favor. Understand?

I wasn't talking about Bob DeCarolis.
I was talking about fans giving rival fans balls for all this time about setting eyes high. Duck fans get this because we come off high highs of seasons like 2001 and 2007. Beaver fans claim not to do this, because that’s one pridepoint, of not being unrealistic and irrational (which is indeed a good quality that many, many Beaver fans possess… as it is with many Duck fans.) My main point has been washed away in this thread I guess… nevermind it.
Kicker.

Your point is valid, I think where it seemed strange to us (me at least) is that you used the DeCarolis piece to bracket you argument. Now the statement under question was from a fan’s reading of the DeCarolis writing (sorry if I seemed to mix the two together too much in my second paragraph of my 2 cents response), but my point is that there is truth to be found in this reading of it. So I guess I thought the irony part and let’s throw it back to some OSU fans dogging on UO fans argument didn’t totally fit.
And I agree with you about the fans, hence my last statement about it going both ways.
And I would add that even though I pride myself as going into the “of not being unrealistic and irrational” thought process, I think that too cuts both ways, for at times it goes into a pessimism about the Beavs (in any sport really) that is VERY annoying. I like being more “down to earth” but at the same time we need to see the potential , and take pride in the accomplishments, and feel good about the future.
So, let’s not totally wash it away. If we are totally missing your point let us know!

I guess I misunderstood
The part I blockquoted, I thought, was directly from the fan, as a result of the excitement about Bob DeCarolis’ 6-step plan or whatever. Of course the AD is going to feed fans that. That’s not what I was pointing out, or, at least, not trying to point out. I was just thinking it was something that was funny coming from the “other half”, so to speak. Not to be confused with JShurley Temple, my better half.

You said “this is exactly why beaver fans > ducks fans” here. One could argue that is elitist. I think we all “understand” your 2nd #1 bullet. Thanks for breaking it down so us lowly Duck fans can understand it. So, we are all shooting to be elite like Notre Dame. Okay, I think I got it now.
