We can’t sleepwalk through the first half on offense if we have any rosy dreams. Other than that, very solid performance by the team.

Very nice, we have some nice momentum going into the final stretch
That one had to feel VERY good for Coach Riley!
Canfield looked tentative in the first half but really got going in the second.
Big time credit has to go to the defense. They kept us in the game when the offense was a little off and held up all game long. I tell you if we play that type of game on defense and the offense clicks a little more we will beat Cal without a huge amount of trouble. Sure the Cal game is going to be a different team, different game, different meaning, but that was a pretty solid game and once again awesome second half adjustments.
“Sleepwalking” = Well remember that was the second string QB in there for his first start of the year. Without some very tentative throws and a bad hand-off that is a different first half. I wouldn’t worry too much (Beaver fans…sigh…).
A little bit more believing is happening for me, if you know what I mean!

Oh, and how can I have forgotton...Congrats to Quizz!!!
PASADENA, Calif. (AP)—Jacquizz Rodgers set a Pac-10 rushing record for freshmen and Sean Canfield filled in ably at quarterback to help Oregon State beat UCLA 34-6 on Saturday.
Rodgers ran for 144 yards to increase his season total to 1,089—the most ever by a freshman in the conference. He’s only the third Pac-10 first-year player to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season. Ken Simonton, the Beavers’ career rushing leader, had 1,028 in 1998 and Darrin Nelson had 1,069 for Stanford in 1977.

Canfield isn't just a second string QB.
He has experience and could have been the starter this year.
And yes, they were sleepwalking.

He is this season
Yes he has experience. Maybe he could have been the starter (I still like Lyle for this team’s make up this year but that’s another argument).
BUT, this was his first game as the starter and we’re talking game #9! He’s coming off surgery. Team is playing with him for the first time in a game situation as the main play caller.
Whether or not his level of past play means he could start does not matter, he has not been starting. He was rusty and tentative today, he was rusty against ASU. My point is that if he hits Sammy in stride it is a TD, if he hands it off properly it is a TD, if he does not underthrow it on that INT it is a possible FG. Those seemed much more about being rusty (maybe a little nervous too) than about the whole team sleepwalking. Sammie and James sure weren’t.
I’m just saying that it is PRETTY good to win a game on the road with your backup against a team you have not won against for how many years? It was not a great half sure, but you know they were still outplaying the Bruins and it showed in the second half when it starting clicking. All the credit to Canfield too, he played a hell of a second half.
Sleepwalking just seems to be they weren’t playing hard, which I personally did not see.

No doubt it was a good win. Any win on the road against a pac-10 team not from Washington is good. I just think that we can’t keep stalling in the first half if we’re going to win against Cal and Zona.
I wouldn’t consider Sean rusty because he played most of the game last week and had a week’s worth of practice with the first teamers. Just because he hasn’t started a game doesn’t mean anything really. Those under throws in my opinion, were because he was nervous. He had a couple passes sail on him last week and was afraid he might have an Anderson arm this week as well.
By sleepwalking I meant we need to finish and not drive all day with nothing to show for it.

I mostly agree with this.
With the rusty part I’m talking about he just doesn’t have the game mindset quite in place. If you are not playing you most likely will be rusty both mechanically and mentally. Lyle will be rusty next week, and really he didn’t start to click until the Hawaii game (ah, scheduling this season…). I think it has been a bit difficult for Sean settling in, and yes nerves are a big part of it (mental rust), because he has not been playing. So okay, yes starting isn’t really the issue, he just has not been playing at all really.
By the way if you look at the drive chart three OSU TDs happened within the UCLA 35 and only took a couple plays at most and one was only one play on the McCants’ TD run. Yes beavsfan10 I’m also glad he’s getting some more touches and I will say it sure is a nice feeling to have two excellent backs and two fine QBs, for the depth of this team is very strong.
Again, I agree about finishing drives and for this game if Canfield makes two solid throws and a smooth handoff then the halftime score is more like 20 to 3 for they were actually doing good things on offense that first half. That was my point. And yes I agree, and as I noted in my first post, we do need to clean that up in order to beat Cal. But Cal hasn’t being lighting it up lately and doing some stalling of their own, it should be a very very interesting match up!

Moevao or Canfield: Who starts vs Cal?
I feel pretty good about Canfield our offense. I know he only ran it against ASU and now UCLA which aren’t as good as CAL, but I feel good about him being able to throw the long ball and throwing pinpoint passes.
I probably would start Moevao vs Cal but would have no hesitation putting Canfield in there when necessary.
Thoughts?

Good Win
Very satisfying win tonight for the Beavs as they broke a 5 game losing streak to UCLA. As RVM mentioned above I’m sure this had to feel VERY good to Coach Riley to finally get this UCLA monkey off his back. A couple of things really stood out to me tonight though:
1. We are better off with Canfield. I know I know. All you guys are going to tell me I’m crazy cause he throws too many INT’s and Moevao is the better leader etc. But the fact is is that Sean Canfield is a better QUARTERBACK than Lyle Moevao. Maybe not a better leader but a better quarterback. He adds such a different dimension to the offense with his ability to throw down the field. A couple of the passes he made to Stroughter tonight Moevao would not have been able to make. Plus lets not forget that Moevao is not immune to throwing INT’s (Wash St anybody?). I’m sure Moevao will be the starter once he is healthy again and I’m fine with that because I have nothing against Moevao. However, in my opinion we are better with Canfield.
2. Ryan McCants is an absolute stud. I love that Coach Riley is getting this guy more involved in the game plan. Even if it is just 5-10 touches a game. It changes the pace so much for our offense and gives Quizz a well deserved breather. I think getting McCants involved is nothing but beneficiary to the team.
3. Our defense made huge strides tonight compared to how they looked the past couple of games. The defense was in no way bad against Wash or Az St but there were some noticeable holes and they looked to have covered up most of those holes tonight. You can see that our secondary is starting to get fully healthy now and it helps even more when our d-line is getting constant pressure. Also did a great job of forcing turnovers. Terrific effort by the D tonight. UCLA or not.
Hopefully this was just the first visit for the Beavs to Pasadena this year…

i loved our defense
bringing pressure every down. Karft had no where to go, his pocket was closing faster and faster each time. Our DBs had a nice day too

O-Line was awesome last night
Drove up to the game to get a feel for the Rose Bowl, (awesome,), and I’ve never seen an OSU quarterback have that much time to pass – EVER. Great job. UCLAN’s defense was pretty strong in the first half but fell apart in the second. After our second TD, the OSU section made more noise than the home fans. We traveled well – lots of fans, a great experience – hoping that I’ll be there again in January.

i was also at the game
a nice two hour drive to pasadena, plenty of tickets available, crowd left with twelve minutes in the game after that first INT. it seems to me that OSU is just a team that wears other teams out. by the time the fourth quarter comes around no one can stop our offense. ucla has no offensive line. we should have had several more interceptions. this game could have gotten very very ugly if a couple more things had gone right (like not fumbling on first and goal).
