What is the story behind this crazy, old photo?

Here's the story of how this photo came to be.
1954: A group of 50 to 60 Oregon students touched off Oregon State's homecoming bonfire in the middle of the night in Corvallis -- a traditional Civil War prank. But Oregon State students cornered 15 to 20 of the invaders and held them prisoner. Captive Oregon students had their heads shaved, were painted orange and black and some were forced to do housework at fraternities. One was led through campus bearing a sign that read: "I'm a dumb Duck."

I hope I'm not the only one who thinks that every part of that is awesome.

Do you do that a lot?
It seems like I’ve seen several posts lately that you’ve modified. I’m not sure if there’s protocol for this, or if you can just do it when you feel like it. It’s your site so I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, I just want to know when I’m reading something if it’s been changed, and if so how. Wouldn’t you typically say somewhere that things have been modified? Again, not my site and I’m not trying to tell you how to run it, I’m just curious.

I change a lot of things if I feel that they need to be changed for context, accuracy, or whatev
If you notice that a caption has been changed or a poll has wackier answers than it used to, then it was probably me.
You should be able to tell when something has been changed by me because I usually change the timestamps when I edit things, but not always. It depends on how much stuff is on the front page. Like, just now I edited the “recruiting update” to include a little bit more info and colorful descriptions, but I didn’t bump the timestamp because it would have put it back up to the top of the front page and above other posts. So I didn’t want to screw with people’s heads.
In this case, my original post was basically stupid but it had that silly picture. I didn’t remember that there was a story behind the picture until I saw it in the Oregonian again. And it’s a funny story, so I gave it a new title, kept the picture and deleted the rest of the text and the comments and updated the timestamp because it was just easier.
The only thing that was kept was the goofy picture—so I only kept comments that were pertinent the picture and deleted the rest because they wouldn’t have made any sense and people were being rather asinine.
I only delete comments when they don’t reflect well on the person writing them, and the stuff that was there was basically going in that direction.
I only maliciously edit fanposts when people are coming to be malicious. Usually, a small change to the headline (Dickson our tight end, for example) and a key phrase or two in the body is enough to do the trick. It’s really fun.
Earlier today, there was also a weird thing where I had a ‘fanshot’ of a Mike Stoops comment that wasn’t an accurate quote. When I found out that the quote had been a mistake I tried to put both of them up on top of each other so people could see them at the same time. Then, when I came back from work, I believe Jake had moved one and…I have no idea what happened. But I don’t want to make Mike Stoops look bad when he was actually being very complimentary.
Other than that, this topic isn’t very interesting.

this is interesting,...
Can you imagine the lawsuits if that had happened in 2004 instead of 1954?

After hearing a lot of the stories from past Civil Wars
It sounds as if this kind of stuff happened all the time. Makes the rivalry a bit more fun, eh? When was the last time a group from either student body pulled a prank on the other? Does anyone have any non-incriminating stories that they would like to share?

I'm kind of disappointed in myself. We didn't do anything towards oregon at all.
I was at OSU in the year of the Tarp! We were going to try and take the tarps down before the Civil War, but they had the stadium lights on for the whole week with security and everything. I found out later that it wouldn’t have mattered because they had 17 backup tarps!!!!
We did a lot of other pranks, but…that’s all internal affairs stuff.
