Postgame React: Beavers wish Cal many happy returns

Not much else to say right now other than this was a great win for this team. I loved how our Special Teams (with the exception of that opening kickoff return) held us in the game until the offense and the defense got things rolling. Lots of positives: Returns by Sammie and James, a great day for Quizz, some big passes by Lyle, and the list goes on.

It was a record crowd of 45,969, but I thought we could have done better, as far as noise, for a sellout. Maybe it was just my vantage point in the stadium- it was still a great atmosphere for college football.

What a great game. Much more coming your way after this one sets in. For now, I'll meet you in the comment section.

No

In the section I was at, people were sitting down midway through the second and third quarters. It was really annoying. I was telling people to stand up and get into the game. I guess they were too busy on their cell phones…

For a record crowd, I am disappointed.

Yes

I thought it was deafening at some points. Especially at the end of the game when Cal had the ball on their own 3, that was the loudest I’ve ever heard it. Cal did a great job though, I only saw them have one false start.

That was my thought as well

There were certain plays where we brought it, but when you look at the whole game, it wasn’t that impressive.

I didn’t know for sure though because I sit on the new side sort of under the overhang, so I can’t even hear the people up above.

That's what I was trying to say

It was really loud during crunch time, but nothing I haven’t witnessed before.

I know MY section was loud :)

Some crazy guy with a water bottle and pennies in it…oh yeah that was me :) Great idea CV300!

Seriously though, that was the loudest I have ever heard that stadium. Maybe it wasn’t the constant noise like in the USC game, but it was definitely LOUDER at times. I especially love the HUH at the end of the first down song that we have added, it really started sounding awesome and extremely loud near the end of the game. From the people I have asked who watched it at home you could even hear on the TV that we were very very loud.

Way to go crowd!

Way to go Beavs!!!!!!!!!

Yes it was: "What a great game"

Hope the stadium/fans and the defense didn’t let people down once again, for I thought this was a very strong win for the program and the season.

Two more to go…

Go Beavs!

Sounded like a great game...

Unfortunately I live on the east coast and had to work. So I just spent 3 1/2 hours getting live updates on my phone. haha. A friend of mine watched the game though and said the crowd was very loud. So props to anyone who was at the game representing Beaver nation. This is was huge win for the program. It is awesome to watch ESPN Gameday and see them talking about the Beavs and following Mike Riley around at practice. And I love that any sports website you go, there is at least one or two articles about the Beavers. No money can buy that kind of publicity (cough* university of oregon cough*). Just two wins away from the Rose Bowl… I still cant get that out of my head.

GO BEAVS!!!

Glad you got the updates!

Maybe you can get a recording of it? It was a fun (and nail-biting at times) game to watch. That return of James was awesome! What a way to get it all back after that first Cal return and drive. And yow that return of Sammie’s!

This is was huge win for the program.

Indeed!

Awesome.

I was at Reser, and the record crowd was indeed a very powerful force today. As soon as I saw the blue skies this morning I knew it was going to be a great game. The Beavers were dominant once again on Defense and held Cal to 87 yards rushing! Quite a statement if you ask me. After the shootout today with the ducks, I think next week is going to be a tough challenge, especially being on the road. Nevertheless, today was a huge win for the program and of course the roses are still smellin pretty! I WAS nervous when Kahut missed that 29-yarder but I never thought the outcome was never in serious jeopardy. This is shaping up to be an incredible Civil War, the ducks are going to want to knock the Beavers off SOOO Bad, it will be my first attendance at a Civil War, looking way forward to it. WOW! What a great game.

Kahut's short kicks seemed to have a weird arc on them today

It was like he was striking them with a lob wedge instead of a 8 iron.

Yes

Seemed like he had problems from that angle, couldn’t get it to hook (slice?) back in and was hitting them much too straight on at his aiming point and it looked like the far post was his spot and he was trying to hook them back in but couldn’t. Hard to tell on TV. He has improved though, which is great and I think he will keep getting better.

Speaking of which, PUNTING!

Where is the love for Hekker? Many here were VERY down on this kid and last week he makes the list of Pac-10 players of the week and this week he hits that last one into the what was it the 5 or 6? Don’t underestimate how big that field position was for putting pressure on Cal and Riley. Most likely we don’t return two INTs to the house if they are starting from around the 20. Plus got those ones away with high snaps, he’s looking very solid now.

With that in mind maybe we can now also stop getting down about the fans? Just like a kicking game nothing is perfect so let’s start enjoying this run!

My favorite post-game bit, from T. Miller’s blog:

Jacquizz was asked about the post-game celebration.

“I don’t get happy,” he said. “I just basically run the ball.”

Mallardvalue that commentary about fans was not directed at you, it was a general bit thrown out there.

No worries! ;)

I completely agree with you. That last punt by Hekker was a monster! I nearly hurt the lady sitting behind me with a high-five! That was a BIG TIME punt right there. Your right, tho, w/o that pin back, the defense prob would not have intercepted those last two passes. It seemed like the punt really fired EVERYBODY up! My section really knows its football and man were we excited. It seemed inevitable that we were to stop them on that last drive. I think Riley (Cal QB) was very rattled out there, he had no chance to drive the length of the field.

Every game I have gone to has been a very good showing by Beaver Nation. This game, tho, was a madhouse, not like the USC game, but close. I could tell right when I got into the stadium that it was PACKED. The new upper level was full, and we set a new attendance record, but I definitely have to give some love to the fans, they were great for this game!

I felt it was pretty loud

I loved all the signs in the stadium, i guess everyone wanted to get on TV.

My favorite one was “Quizz is the Shizz”

Great Win

The Beavs played well and got a big victory. But at times I felt like Lyle was a bit out of sync with the offense. His passes to the middle of the field were forced and dangerous and best. He did have some big throws on timing routs to the sidelines that kept some drives alive. He just didn’t have his normal energy that I like to see. Quizz was a horse like normal and Sammie played huge, with his punt return and and the big gain on the fumbled end around (thanks in large part to some amazing blocks). He also took out two bears on a block that allowed James to score on the fly sweep. As for the crowd? It did seem a bit dead at times, but the whole energy of the game felt a bit off to me. And we need some updates on the music played in the stadium. After witnessing the energy of the Penn State crowd, we have a ways to go. But all criticism aside it was a great day for the defense (minus a couple of big plays by cal) and a huge win. And how bout those new U of O uniforms? Black and wings?

Lyle needs more practice time

the short week proabably didn’t help.

What kind of music do you want played?

Music + Lyle

I don’t know if you went to the Penn State game, but hearing 100,000 people sing “Sweet Caroline” in unison is pretty amazing. Im not sure if OSU fans are going to start singing “Soldier Boy” as a collective during a timeout. I guess timimg is a bit of an issue as well, becuse in the middle of an O-S-U chant they started playing “Jump Around” over the cheer. I do love the chainsaw though, Reeser gets very loud on big 3rd downs. And I do love Lyle, he gives us the best chance at winning and i think he is a great QB. I was just missing that fire. I wanted him to headbutt a teammate.

by firewood79 on Nov 16, 2008 7:01 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree, I mentioned this about the ASU game and thought the music overwhelmed the cheers at times. Stuff like the chainsaw I’m good about (although personally to me it sounds a bit like a cow/bull) for at least it is more about getting people charged up to make noise (as with the clips), as in a call to cheer. The music just seems like loud filler stuff that seems to ask one not to cheer until it is done.

I agree about Lyle too, though we have give a ton of credit to Sean for stepping in and playing very well.

As Loud as the USC game in my section..

Section 112 was on theior feet most of the game. Great win – a little scary at times, but what can you say about the defense? Unreal…

Thankful that the ghosts of Parker Stadium are gone....

One thing I like about this team...

is that we have so many playmakers that it is nearly impossible for us to “not show up”. No matter what, somebody is going to be having a good day.

I like that Quizz is a freshman.

And Quan is a sophomore.

Giving [Batum] the freedom to go for steals is going to be like giving a redneck six boxes of ammo and a quarter mile of empty Bud cans. - Dave

I think that also helps our recruiting.

Knowing that those two will be a part of our program for 2-3 more years.
