Could OSU win the PAC-10 and still miss the Rose Bowl?
Many OSU fans have been salivating over the possibility of our first
Rose Bowl appearance since '64--that was before I (and many others here) were born.
If we win out--no easy thing, with Cal, @Zona, and the Quacks in the next three weeks--we're in. At best U$C can tie the Beavs, and we win the tiebreak.
However, I've seen discussion on a U$C fanboard of how the Beavs might get screwed out of a Rose Bowl bid--even if we did win out. Certainly, The Powers That Be would probably not relish the thought of a 9-3 team from a smaller school playing in the BCS.
So, what's the angle you ask? Simple.
Penn State.
With the Nittany Lions losing to Iowa over the weekend, their hopes for a title game bid are probably in the toilet. So what's left for them? A Big-10 title, and a Rose Bowl appearance.
But we have already played Penn State this year:
Acording to "Rule B" of the BCS rulings (this is clipped from another blog post and I don't have a link to the source handy):
5. After completion of the selection process as described in Paragraph Nos. 1-4, the conferences and Notre Dame may, but are not required to, adjust the pairings taking into consideration the following:
A. whether the same team will be playing in the same bowl game for two consecutive years;
B. whether two teams that played against one another in the regular season will be paired against one another in a bowl game;
C. whether the same two teams will play against each other in a bowl game for two consecutive years; and
D. whether alternative pairings may have greater or lesser appeal to college football fans as measured by expected ticket sales for the bowls and by expected television interest, and the consequent financial impact on Fox and the bowls.
Emphasis added by me:
So, questions for those more knowledgeable.
1) If OSU wins the Pac-10, and PSU wins the Big 10--could The Powers That Be decide that OSU shouldn't get to play in the Rose Bowl?
2) If the answer to #1 is yes--do we then have to be invited to another BCS bowl instead? (My take on reading the above is that TPTB are limited to swapping bowl assignments among the BCS teams; that they cannot exclude a conference champion on grounds of having previously played another conference champion).
3) If we do win the Pac-10--does U$C still earn an at-large BCS bid, screwing over someone like Utah (who beat us--wouldn't that be ironic?)
What would Beaver fandom think if OSU were to win the Pac-10, and be rewarded with an invite to the Fiesta Bowl instead of a ticket to Pasadena? What matters more--the Pac-10 championship, or having it be the RB?

It’s an interesting question, but the Rose Bowl usually favors tradition over these rules, and they’ll want to see the Pac-10 and Big 10 face off. Since Penn State will probably be the only Big 10 team, the only question is whether USC earns an at-large and the Rose Bowl picks the Trojans again. Oregon State would still get their BCS bid though.

OK, so I know that I've read it at least 3 times in this post and from BearsNecessity, but I need a simple yes or no
If the Rose Bowl were to select USC, does it still guarantee Oregon State a BCS invitation?

I believe the answer to that question is “yes”. They can be moved around…not moved out. Therefore, it may be a Fiesta for OSU if Penn State beats Michigan State and OSU wins out. I’m curious. Would Oregon State fans be ok with going to the Fiesta Bowl or would it seem like something less considering the amount of time it has been since the last one? Especially interesting given the idea that USC could be the one to take the Beavers’ spot in the Rose Bowl

I'd prefer the Rose Bowl, obviously.
But a BCS bowl is a BCS bowl.
The team that would get screwed in such a scenario would be a Utah or a Boise State—both of which are presently undefeated, have taken down Pac-10 teams—but might find themselves out of the BCS if OSU gets in by virtue of winning the Pac-10, and U$C gets in by virtue of being one of the BCS Top 6.

I agree with that--Rose Bowl is the goal.
I really want the Rose Bowl but we’re rational people here—the Fiesta as a CONSOLATION would be amazing.

The Rose Bowl gets the Pac-10 and Big-10 Champions. Read my comment below, they are contractually required to take the Pac-10 champion and cannot exchange that pick with any other bowl.

I think USC would actually prefer Fiesta Bowl
I wonder if USC would even accept the bid from the Rose Bowl? They are hurting for respect right now, and beating up a Big 10 team wouldn’t really do the trick. Beating the Big 12 Champion, or 2nd place (assuming the Fiesta Bowl would still take Texas or Oklahoma, which I think it would) would be a better decision for SC. Any thoughts?

I think in our case.
Penn State would be moved around since they are BCS eligible, while we aren’t even ranked. But who knows…

Well MSU is out if they lose to PSU.
Even if MSU wins, they still need the Bucks to lose another. So it looks like OSU v OSU would probably be the match up.

I don’t know how we match up but I think it’s doable. Any given Saturday…

Dream indeed...
They could keep the “tOSU” crap—never liked that and always thought it sealed the deal that people in that community are huuuuuge d-bags that need to be taken down a few notches. Well, unless there name starts with a “G” and ends with a “reg Oden”… in that rare case, I’m cool with ’em.

I agree with VD - USC would rather go to the Fiesta...
I don’t think they want (need) to prove that they can kick whatever Big Ten team AGAIN. That way, we’re smellin’ roses. Also, here’s a list of current bowl predictions for the Beavs, as of today:
cbssports.com: Holiday vs. Oklahoma State
nbcsports.com: Vegas vs. TCU
ESPN.com: Sun vs. Nebraska (Schlabach)
ESPN.com: Emerald vs. Wake Forest (Feldman)
cfnscout.com: Holiday vs. Oklahoma State
SI.com: Holiday vs. Oklahoma State
sportprojections.com:
Sun vs. Notre Dame
Typical ESPN – where’s the love?! And wouldn’t another Notre Dame bashing be sweet? Have to admit, Holiday against OkieStateU would be nice for me, (WAY too much orange and black though), but I’d rather hop in the car and be at the Rose Bowl…..

When do the Beavs become Rose Bowl favorites?
To get in, that is… it isn’t unreasonable to assume that USC will run the table and OSU won’t given that USC has crap left in league games; while we got Cal, Zona, and the Nike subsidiary.
But if we drop the Bears this Saturday—expect all the BCS prognasticators to start dirtying their drawers over the prospect of the Pac-10—in what everyone admits is a down year for the conference—sending two teams to the BCS.
Hey, it it is one more nail in the BCS coffin that leads us to a real playoff, I’m OK with it.

The quoted section of the BCS Selection process is incomplete
Here is how that reads in full (emphasis mine):
5. After completion of the selection process as described in Paragraph Nos. 1-4, the conferences and Notre Dame may, but are not required to, adjust the pairings taking into consideration the following:
A. whether the same team will be playing in the same bowl game for two consecutive years;
B. whether two teams that played against one another in the regular season will be paired against one another in a bowl game;
C. whether the same two teams will play against each other in a bowl game for two consecutive years; and
D. whether alternative pairings may have greater or lesser appeal to college football fans as measured by expected ticket sales for the bowls and by expected television interest, and the consequent financial impact on Fox and the bowls.
The pairings may not be altered by removing the Big 10 Champion or Pac-10 champion from the Rose Bowl.
That’s from HERE.

interesting. So the Rose Bowl has the only pairings “locked in” and avoids the moving around clause that other BCS bowls could use. Good find!

There’s some advantage to the Grandaddy of them all.
Ironically the Rose Bowl is also one of the largest impediments to a playoff system.
