Recruiting Class 09, Early Commits

After seeing CV's report, I decided to dip into my Rivals account to see just how our recruiting has been so far. Generally, Oregon State has been a slow recruiting team, picking up guys late in the season. However, as of now, we have 11 commits that break down to 7 3-stars, 3 2-stars, and 1 no stars. Interesting that three of our commits come from Oklahoma, a state that is now producing TWO excellent D1 programs. Hope to be able to keep this kids committed until signing day. This could be the best signing class we have had in some years. So anyways, here's a couple of names that CV3000 didn't mention that could have Oregon State fans excited in the next couple years.

Dax Dilbeck, QB, 6'1" 175, Edmond, OK

The kid could be our first dual threat QB in a long time (if ever). The 3-star kid runs a 4.5 40 and from what I read throws a pretty ball as well. He seems excited to be wearing the orange and black, as he said after the USC game: "It looked like it was amazing there," Dilbeck said. "They really got people talking about Oregon State here. A lot of people were excited because it made OU [Oklahoma] number one, but they also took note of the Oregon State atmosphere. I got a lot of text messages that night from people saying that they were excited for me." Now, as stacked as we are at QB, look for the kid to redshirt next year, and start competing for PT his RS Sophomore year. Plus, how could you not love a kid named Dax Dilbeck? If that doesn't scream Oregon State, then I don't know what else does.

Star-divide

Michael Doctor, OLB, 6', 195, Tulsa, OK

Anyone remember the name Derrick Dogget? This kid looks to be in the exact same mold as him. The 3-star kid is ranked as the #10 player in Oklahoma and the #27 OLB in the country. He's quick (he says he runs a 4.4 40, but who really knows) and strong. His only other offer was from Tulsa, but had "heavy interest" from A&M, Michigan, OU, and Oklahoma State. If you have a Rivals or Scouts account, I suggest you go and watch his video. Remember when you saw high school highlights of Jacquizz and said "Man this kid is gonna be good"? That's exactly what comes to mind when watching this boy play.

Kyrell Hudson, ATH, 6', 185, Vancouver, WA

Not sure where this kid projects for the football team, but the 3-star athlete is also committed to playing baseball for Pat Casey as well. He is just a flat out athlete. My guess would be WR or DB given his stats, but who knows what Riley and Co. will pull out of his hat.

Besides these three guys, we have a couple OL commits from Oregon (we love our local boys down here in Corvallis) another QB, and a few others. I will try to keep a weekly posting of recruiting as best as I can, letting you know of any new commits, official/unofficial visits, thoughts from recruits, etc. The fun part with Oregon State recruits is we look at the 1, 2, and 3 star guys and say "who is going to be the Next Sammie, the Next Sabby, or Doggett, etc. And as always, GO BEAVS!

Just let me dust off this notebook here

First dual threat QB ever? Dontcha remember those option QBs that Jerry Pettibone recruited back in the ’90s? Do the names Tim Alexander and Don Shanklin ring a bell?

Oh…maybe the implication is “successful” dual threat QB. Never mind.

Dax Dilbeck is indeed a neat football name, but clearly Michael Doctor is a football broadcaster’s dream. Did someone call a Doctor? The Doctor is in the house!

We now return to our regular programming.

Dilbeck will be a defensive back or a wide out.

Won’t play QB. If you look at his stats, he has like twice as many rushing yards as passing.

He’s a real team guy, and just an all-around aware, heads up football player. His track times are almost identical to Jordan Bishop—speed kills.

Fair assessment. I’d say a guy with his skill set is destined to fit into OSU’s secondary quite nicely unless he comes in and absolutely melts everyone’s faces off with his throwing ability.

Either way, Dax “Double D” Dilbeck is a pretty cool name to have on the roster. I just hope he gives me good reason to say it a lot. And in a good way, like as in, “Oh man, did you see Masoli get completely Dax’d on that Safety blitz?! Holy crap!” and not, “Oh man, he completely Dax’d that punt. We need a new return man.”

That's reserved for Chung

Chunged: to whiff a tackle against a much faster and better football player so that you can come back with an incredibly silly nickname the next season and try to tell everyone that your position group is the best in the country, when you’re actually the 110th best.

Didn't look at his stats

And he didn’t have a video. But good to know. The kid sounds like a stud

The QB offers are...

Cody Vaz and Jack Lomax. They’re both incredibly efficient high school quarterbacks. I think they’ve thrown like 10 total interceptions in their combined high school careers against 75 touchdowns.

They both have some growing to do still.

Future Beavs...

This year’s recruiting class is starting to look like one of the best in recent memory. Even though there aren’t many commits at this point, we all know that Mike Riley and Co. tend to start slow and finish strong (on both the field and on the recruiting trail). I also love that we are starting to establish pipelines in both Texas and Oklahoma as both of these states produce A LOT of D1 talent. I mean no, we wont get the same guys that Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, etc. get but there is still plenty of talent to be had in those states (ie: the rodgers brothers anyone?) and Mike Riley and his staff are some of the best in the country at finding that hidden talent. I also would expect recruiting to pick up as we make a push to the Rose Bowl. And of course we will get our normal rush of JUCO talent towards the end. All in all though the future of Beaver football continues to look bright.

GO BEAVS!!!

I loved last year's class.

So much speed. Keynan Parker. Jordan Bishop. Orange Jesus.

I mean no, we wont get the same guys that Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, etc.

Only because they can only go to one school. Oregon State has equivalent athletes though. No reason to act like that’s not the case.

I understand what you are saying

All I meant by saying we wont get the same guys is that we don’t get the “4 or 5 star” guys like those school do but that certainly doesn’t mean anything. Recruiting rankings might be the most over-hyped thing in college football (along with pre-season polls). I believe OSU has done better than any other college in the country at finding those “diamonds in the rough” and developing players. So yes I agree, we can play with anyone in the country because we are definitely not lacking talent in Corvallis.

James Rodgers is one of the fastest players in college football history.

Somebody thought it would be a good idea to give him a 1-star rating.

And, here he is, the 2nd most productive sophomore player in the conference, only behind Jahvid Best. INTERESTING.
