Gameday Open Thread: OSU at #15 Utah (L, 28-31)

Oregon St. Beavers @ Utah Utes

There's not much I want to talk about after this game. All I know is that we should be 4-1, but we're 2-3 instead.

This is it

If we win this game . . . we’re officially legit again.

Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.

Not when you lose to Stanford

And I will say right now, as confident as I am in our team, this game just REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKS of us getting blown out. Nationally televised Thursday night road game against a (talent wise) inferior opponent? It’s the perfect storm for our team…

And...

How the HELL does the team get hyped up? I mean seriously? You can try, but how can anything compare to the whirlwind past week? That being said, the Beavs look to be back on track and as long as they don’t start out slow I think they win again.

I like the yellow helmets!

Exactly

We cannot get behind in this game.
If we have to play catch up, we will have to throw the ball, and when we throw the ball a lot, well, yeah….
Everybody say it with me:
DEFENSE (clap clap)
DEFENSE (clap clap)
JA-QUIZZ RODG-ERS (clap clap clap clap clap)
JA-QUIZZ RODG-ERS (clap clap clap clap clap)

Those are the two keys to the game tonight

I share some of your concerns! But...

You know this game also reminds a bit of the Hawai’i game two years ago. OSU just keeps floating under the legit radar and everyone is excited about this BCS buster team that is going to prove to the nation they are the real thing (Hawai’i). As such the Beavs were going to get thrashed by Colt Brennan on national TV.

Sure it was later in the season and there wasn’t all this “pay back” talk, but there still was all this other similar type of talk. Let down from the big Civil War win. Doesn’t matter in the Pac-10 standings (and again I know Hawai’i was later in the season and the bowl berth was locked in for us, but again this connects to that whole let down factor). Non-BCS school taking down the Pac-10 school. OSU being in a hostile environment. Etc.

But we know what happened in that game.

Again, the early in the season non-conference games have haunted OSU, but this one really is after a turn around the corner for the team whereas those others were before the big win happened to turn the season around.

It’s football so who in the hell knows, but I’m feeling slightly better about this one than other non-conference games.

I’m excited and nervous!

100% agree with the 2006 Hawaii Comparision

RVM, I thought the exact thing earlier this week with that game in 2006. And I don’t want to deflate all the Ute fans out there calling this a revenge game but seriously? This is a revenge game? Their is no rivalry. 2007’s game wasn’t heated. OSU has tremendous respect for Utah. If you want to know what a revenge game is, look into the OSU/Fresno State game in 2002. When OSU got flagged for a kick catch interference and a celebration penalty for the illegal hit, you know the emotions are jacked up for some revenge.

I see Oregon State playing as well as they did against USC in this game and possibly leaving SLC with a win. And if they don’t, then last weeks victory over USC loses a lot of its luster even if it is memorialized as a t-shirt.

I was trying to explain the FSU/OSU mini-rivalry

To a Nebraska friend of mine. It was brought up during the CWS last year. As much as I love the underdog, I couldn’t root for Fresno St. Their fans are so obnoxious and annoying it makes me sick.

As dangerous as it would be for our football team, I’d love to schedule a home and home with them soon so the fights at Reser can begin! HAHA

Yep

I also think the “revenge” thing is not as big a factor as many are making it out to be. The talk going into the USC game had some of this too (revenge for 2006), and?

That type of talk seems a bit insecure to me, I think if Utah wins they have to beat OSU with good solid playing and making OSU make mistakes.

We need to wrap up their big backs

We have to wrap up Utah’s big backs, otherwise we are screwed.

Yes, but,...

As Jacquizz proved last week, even little backs can make people miss. I’m not quite convinced that three inches and ten pounds makes a huge difference, but maybe.

I think...

Sammie is playing but sounds limited, and is not returning punts.

Hughes and Afalava = Are both a maybe go and maybe not, kind-of sounds like a last minute decision for both.

But he needs to be healthy

I’m still pretty sure that a healthy Barker is better than a hurting Kahut, but I’m not sure. It just kinda makes me mad that I’m pretty sure Kahut’s injury manifested from the fact that he didn’t come to camp fully conditioned.

I'll agree

The only knock on Barker I think is his experience. He drove that field goal that was blocked, and ultimately would have ended the game, when he could have just put a little under it and made it. No worries though.

Hey Jake, I couldn’t focus in class and I was just thinking about football all day long. My question to you is: Do we have some of the best position coaches in the conference??

If he did,

It’s a poor call. The call was pass interference, and by the rule books, the call should not have anything to do with the reaction by Laybourn.

The ref is thinking about it way too much if

he watches the play, takes five steps, then throws the flag. Obviously many other things, other than the play, enter his head in those five seconds. Or however long it was.

It wasn't like Oregon State played out of their minds.

They played a solid game, but they made mistakes prior to the late moments of the game. They turned the corner at USC. This game was a tough game which they should have won against a good team. It hurts.

by Cablinasian on Oct 2, 2008 9:45 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tough Loss Guys

I admit, going into this game, I had two frames of thought

1. Oregon State loss = USC win was a fluke, OSU is not as good as Beaver fans think
2. Oregon State win = Penn State loss was a fluke. OSU is for real.

Well, I learned a lot about OSU in this game. I think its a combination of the two. I think Oregon State is for real even though they lost. They made some critical mistakes but looked awesome at times. Tonight backed my opinion that OSU is made for teams like USC.

Tough penalty at the end, and I know I’m in the minority but I’ve seen that called a lot this year in all kinds of games from all kinds of officials. Oregon had one against WSU that was much the same where an Oregon receiver was going for the ball and ran THROUGH the WSU defender with the defender being called. Hopefully they look at the rule after the season. It just doesn’t seem right on that type of play to call that penalty.

I’m with you Jake, I thought it was going to be unsportsmanlike as well.

I wish you guys would have won against Andy Ludwig.

for the record

i do think that was a legit pass interference call. he ran into the reciever before he was able to catch it. The pass might have been uncatchable, but it was an easy call to make. why it took so long to throw the flag, i don’t know…

But you have to call the play by the rulebook, and the rules would probably call that ball uncatchable.

It was the lateness that stung the most.

by Charles Barkley McLovin on Oct 2, 2008 9:49 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The thing that really is bad, however.

Is that the ref stopped and thought about the call. That means he wasn’t sure if it was PI or not.

Deciding a game on a call, you have to be sure it was a penalty.

by Cablinasian on Oct 2, 2008 9:51 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, he ran into the defender.

That’s the real problem. He was running the other way, the QB threw the ball behind him and the receiver had to stop, turn around and try and run through the pursuing defender (who had his hands up) to get back to where the ball was heading. He has a right to catch the ball, not a right to have nobody standing between him and wherever the ball ends up being thrown. The DB had good position and ended up between the receiver and where the ball was going. That’s good defense and just what you want.

by Brad Grenz on Oct 2, 2008 10:08 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jake said it best though.

That doesn’t make this better. This loss stings.

True

But have to look forward, sigh…

Yes, moving forward.

But it really does take this whole season down a notch.

Prevent defense sucks.

I'm out of here

Needed somewhere to vent.

The Beavs are a damn good team, and usually I’ll give props to the victors like Stanford did out play us much of the time so have to give them credit, and Penn State very much was the better team, but tonight…tonight I just can’t really go there. That game was given away by the better team tonight (IMO) and like everyone has pointed out this will sting all year long. Even if we did the near impossible and won out the rest of the conference games (tough task, not impossible I guess, but it will be tough) this one will hang over us. It is strange I think I would have handled it better if Utah just came out and flat out beat us you know something like 35 to 21 or 35 to 28.

still in shock

i still cant believe the end of the game. after we scored with about 2 mins left i was at least sure we would go to overtime at the very least but then we self-destructed. i hate squib kicks and i hate prevent defense. there is no use for either of those in the game of football. i can only hope we can still recover for an 8 or 9 win season. it just hurts to know we should be 4-1 right now.

I'm with you, man.

This loss hurts more than any loss I can remember. But, I guess it will wear off.

Many have commented on the prevent d...

and I TOTALLY agree! I don’t usually get all critical but that game rubs me the wrong way!

The D was solid all game really except for a couple broken plays and very strong in the second half (another awesome coaching adjustment in the second half), so why change the scheme to something the players are not in the groove to adjust to so late in the game. We were making the QB make poor throws with pressure on him, stay with it! Plus the prevent puts in a bunch of new personnel who are not as fresh and used to the Utah schemes. The D really was the part that kept us in that game so why change it?

The kick was kind-of whatever for me. I kind-of understand it since that the guy ran one back 70 yards and they needed 8 but in the end the squib still gave them the good field position.

The 2 point tries also got to me, Put points on the board, he’ll won’t miss all the extra points and I think EVEN one point there changes the game dynamic because that puts us up 9, they still score 8 and are still behind. My guess is an on-side kick and even if they hold us to 3 and out and we can’t run the clock out the punt will be in much better field position and with much less time for them to go farther.
