UCLA seems low at #8, but....

Has ASU done enough to drop that low?

Last night was UCLA's first touchdown on the road...

…so, yeah, they’re squarely in the 8th/9th/10th echelon.

You could move Stanford up a spot based on the comparative resumes of the mediocre team you would be switching them with.

by CV3000 on Oct 12, 2008 3:23 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You could do that

You could also move a 3-3 OSU team down for having 1 quality win against USC and beating up on 2 vastly inferior teams at home. No wins out side of Reser. Numbers 3 through 5 seem interchangeable at this point. Depends on who you like more. All three programs have issues at this point

Don't let me get between you two...

about your team arguments and I do realize you are defending your team, but not sure I see where the Beavs have “issues at this point.” Sure did early on but not seeing any glaring “issues” right now. Issues can always come up of course, but the Beavs have been playing pretty solid of late, which I’m not sure I can say of either Stanford or UO.

I agree RVM

Plus, Oregon State has the advantage when you look at the schedules. The Ducks have their three of their toughest remaining games- ASU, Cal, OSU- on the road. The Beavs have those games at home.

by Jake Bertalotto on Oct 12, 2008 5:15 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No glaring issues?

Oregon State

1. Punting / Kicking game
2. Inconsistent play from defense
3. Moevao inconsistency

Oregon
1. Kicking Game
2. Passing Game
3. Passing Defense

Stanford
1. Passing Offense
2. Inconsistent Defense
3. Injuries

I’m not trying to claim that Oregon has more going for them than Oregon State but I think you can nitpick those three teams enough to have them pretty close between 3-5.

Are we talking current play or not?

Punting and kicking may well be the biggest issue for the Beavs right now and that is one I could see coming up again. But the kicking game looked solid this week, punting no chance to see really. So I may give you that, but I would argue no where near what UO is dealing with and at least we have new guys in there.

Not sure I would go there about the defense in the last four weeks. Utah was probably the worse defensive game of late and that one was against a very good team and the defense did come up big almost all the game. That last two minutes stunk but not sure that really goes into the type of glaring issue UO seems to have game in and game out with its D.

You seem more concerned about Moevao than I am. He’s not Tom Brady but he’s not an “issue,” but that’s my opinion.

I don’t know the way these three teams have been playing the last month I would very much put OSU above the other two. I actually disagree with others and would argue that UO is a solid pick above Stanford pick right now. Maybe I’m just feeling good but I actually would put OSU and Cal very close. Cal has had some “issues” too but again nothing on the level I’m seeing from UO and Stanford. Oh, and OSU doesn’t have the R-G writing stories about glaring issues that I know of. http://www.registerguard.com/web/sports/773158//story.csp

I’m not trying to bash the heck out of the Ducks or Cardinals, but I just personally feel the Beavs are playing some very good ball right now. Is it perfect? Hell no, but it’s much much better than it was a month ago.

Good points RVM. I think your comments about Moevao are especially true. From an outside perspective, I see Moevao as woefully inconsistent, interception prone and someone that can cost the team. 2 pick 6’s I think this year? From the Beaver perspective, I can really buy the “no Tom Brady” argument. I think the same things apply to Masoli/Roper for Oregon. No passing game to speak of from an outside point of view. Many facets to their game from an inside point of view.

Man I’m glad to be having these discussions. Much better to have the “We are both pretty good and near the top” argument than the “we are both pretty bad and at the bottom” discussion that the Washington schools are having

True and something funny

I actually thought (think?) you guys have been a bit too critical of Roper. Masoli I don’t really have +/- opinion of besides he can sure run!

But back to Moevao, I don’t know, okay maybe I have the orange and black glasses on. He’s probably not going to the NFL but I just like his game for OSU. And I feel he has been this year much more solid than Anderson or Moore were overall, except for Moore’s turnaround in 06.

And look

I may seem all on this OSU over UO thing, but look at my posts to these power rankings since Jake has been posting them. I haven’t always been on the band wagon of putting OSU above UO. I thought UO looked much better for a good amount of time there. I’ll also be the first to admit if it switches around.

I just don’t see it right now.

You won’t get an argument from me. I think duck fans would be pretty hard pressed to say that Oregon is going into the second half of the season with momentum. There is definitely a feeling of skating by in certain regards.

The bye week will hopefully help

My response up top was mainly to express the point that 3-5 are fairly close together. I should know better than to try to respond to CV. If he had his way, Oregon wouldn’t even be on the poll.

Nothing wrong with "skating by"

“Skating by” is the “Eugene Way!”

The Methamphetamine All-Stars Springfield Racing Team should be proud to skate by…it’s what put you in a position to be able to THREEPEAT 5th place in the conference when you finish in 5th again this year.

3rd-5th in this conference are close right now, BUT there’s an obvious pecking order: OSU, Stanford, then the team that thinks it has elite talent even though it only has 5 NFL starters. That’s the order.

And, you’re absolutely right—I HAVE told Jake several times that we shouldn’t include the 5th place team in any way, but…there they are. Why bother with ranking them throughout the season, since their fans will just whine about wherever we put them even though they’re a LOCK for 5th place almost always?

OH, I forgot! We include the duckies because their fans are obsessed with what their Big Brothers think about them and they really, really, really want to impress their Big Brothers. That’s why.

Color me impressed. Congrats on not wearing onesies this weekend, girls.

4 of 19, 42 yards...

…or whatever it was.

IF UCLA had just played a spy at any point, Masoli would be in the hospital.

Hey, at least you guys got to score on them this year.

by CV3000 on Oct 12, 2008 7:15 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep, probably. But they didn’t, we won, and he had a good chunk of rushing yards.

Hey, at least you guys got to score on them this year.

I know you are just trying to get a rise out of Duck fans with your controversial comments but I should let you know something. In the words of the Myspace generation, QQ more.

No sense in coming over here to try and change minds.

Besides, more people would support their rankings if they hadn’t treated winning the Utah game in the final 2 minutes like contracting HIV

What about how 2 of our loses came on the road against undefeated teams?

That’s gotta say something.

Where is UO’s quality win? Don’t say Purdue or I will end your life.

The Artist Formerly Known as OrState GoBeavs

by The VD Special on Oct 12, 2008 7:51 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, I think it does say something. UO doesn’t have a quality win…at least not to the degree that USC is for Oregon State. What Oregon does have going for it is that the losses they have are quality losses in Boise State and USC. Oregon State has one bad loss (although it may not be that bad depending on how the season ends up for Stanford) and 2 quality losses.

So you have 1 bad loss, 2 quality losses (Utah and Penn State) w/ a super good quality win again USC for Oregon State. For Oregon, you have 2 quality losses with no quality wins or bad losses to this point.

That is why I argue that the 3-5 spots are pretty close and it depends more on leanings. I don’t disagree with the rankings persay but I wouldn’t be surprised if AtQ had the order Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and a Cardinal blog saying Stanford, Oregon State, Oregon

Purdue

…I had to do it. I find it amusing that everything on this site comes down to an argument about the Ducks when CV comes into play. Beavs won, Ducks won. We move on and get to play the schedule out. CV can yell as loud as he wants, from the top of the highest mountain he can find…and the games STILL have to be played. I cannot complain about the BEAVER blog putting the Beavs above the Ducks in a Power Poll.

I will give you the Purdue win MCD

ONLY because you are so nice to me and that win was on the ROAD, something we have not been able to do this year. But the Ducks looked awful in their two loses, and haven’t really played the meat of their schedule.

If the season were to end right now, the way the teams are stacked up, I’d put us ahead of the Ducks. But UO has a chance to really prove themselves in your next three games against ASU, @Cal, and then home to Stanford. Come away 3-0 from that time (assuming we win our next 3 as well) and then we’ll talk. I think that’s fair

After we went 5-6 the year before, and we had just lost to WSU at home, I told EVERYBODY that I was never going to another Oregon State football game as long as Mike Riley was coach.

I’ve been to every one since that game. Even when I wasn’t sure if we were good or not, I still went. Man, I just can’t get enough Beaver
